Team Manager Development Programme

This national programme has been commissioned from IPC by the SSIA in consultation with the Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) Cymru and the Care Council for Wales (CCW).

Financial support for the development and introduction of this course has come from the Director of Social Services within the Welsh Assembly Government. It has been designed to ensure that it supports social care, including social work, management development and helps improve service quality and outcomes in Wales.

Whilst it seeks to help students to develop a strong understanding of managing practice quality, it emphasises application to practice and practice development. Work-based learning is an essential element of the programme.

The programme will help local authorities to support their workforce development. It is aimed at front line managers and senior practitioners, to help improve the management of practice quality in social care settings. The primary role of the programme is:

  • To help managers to develop an in-depth understanding of the key drivers influencing practice quality in social care.
  • To help managers develop their critical thinking skills, and to make better case management decisions.
  • To enable managers to apply a range of tools and techniques to improve practice quality within their teams, and to develop their ability to manage practice quality within social care settings.

To achieve its aims the programme seeks to use the resources of the student group as a learning community, but it also recognises the importance of developing managers as independent learners and practitioners.

The programme is set in the context of guidance and legislation by the Welsh Assembly Government, Department of Health and Department for Children, Schools and Families, and is regularly updated to reflect current national policy and guidance.

The governance is through the 'National Programme Management Committee' which is currently chaired and hosted by SSIA.  Membership is as follows:

  • Cathryn Thomas (SSIA - Chair)
  • Tracy Hinton (SSIA - project administration)
  • Ellis Williams (ADSS Cymru, Rhondda Cynon Taff)
